'Everything must finish': Peter Williams' emotional goodbye, guard of honour at TVNZ before move to Magic Talk

Peter Williams has presented his final bulletin on 1 NEWS as he prepares to move to MediaWorks next year.

The veteran broadcaster ended Sunday evening's programme with a short but emotional speech thanking his colleagues and the audience for supporting him over the last 40 years.

Williams began working at TVNZ in 1979 as a rugby league commentator, but admits he "wasn't a very good one". He says he has enjoyed "pretty much all" of his career ever since, "but everything must finish".

He walked out of the studio to a guard of honour, with cheers, hugs and high-fives from his colleagues.

In November it was announced that Williams would join Magic Talk as a talk radio host in 2019. The new station, which merges Magic and RadioLIVE, will launch on January 19.

Williams says he's "delighted" about his new job with MediaWorks, and is enthusiastic about bringing his own views to a brand new station.

"I have been mainly a TV person for nearly 40 years, but my introduction to the broadcasting industry was through radio, and that was with a station in Dunedin which has subsequently become More FM," he explained.

"So in many respects, this role is a return to where I came from and the circle is complete."
