Off the back of a stand-out year for local artists, Recorded Music New Zealand has released its official, end-of-year chart information, revealing the nation's most-loved songs of 2018.

Hometown heroes Six60 didn't just secure top spots across the lists - remarkably, there was not a single week where either the Top40 Albums or Top40 Singles charts didn't feature the 'Vibes' hitmakers, all year.

Not surprisingly, in turn, the 'Don't Give It Up' stars boasted an enviable presence across the charts, taking out the top two spots on the New Zealand Albums and New Zealand Singles countdowns.

Reggae band Sons of Zion weren't without an achievement of their own, with their only official release this year ranking number five in the top NZ singles of 2018 and listed within the global top 50.

Penned by Matt Sadgrove in their Auckland studio, the songwriter said the band - who have been together 12 years - are "stoked" that their hard is paying off.

Six60 achieved an incredible feat with the five-piece Dunedin band appearing in either the Top40 Albums or Top40 Singles charts every week, all year.

But which international heavyweights are we vibing the most?

For the second year in a row, Ed Sheeran's Divide was the biggest album of the year, with his 11-times platinum offering failing to drop outside of the top 10 all year.

On the singles front, Drake had four tracks included in the final top 50, including 'God's Plan', which made waves with nine weeks at number one.

The track was streamed more than 10 million times and stayed in the Top40 for 30 weeks.

Paul Kennedy, who curates the Recorded Music New Zealand Official Charts, told Newshub the charts are a reflection of what people are consuming.

He commended Six60 on their standout year and say the charts are "a continuation" of what we already knew following their sold-out Western Springs gig and Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards wins.

"It makes you realise how monumental that band is when they're competing with the likes of Ed Sheeran and Eminem and beating them on the same terms that every other international artist has to perform."

Mr Kennedy said the local music scene is prosperous with potential for further greatness in 2019 thanks to "a heap of new acts being singed" and a bit more activity going on in the industry.

"It's really encouraging at the moment and the diversity of New Zealand music too - lots of artists that are completely unique, so hopefully they will do well."
