Shailene Woodley believes young women should be taught how to pleasure themselves and wants to write a book about it.

The Divergent and Big Little Lies star has been nominated for Golden Globes and an Emmy, and is in a relationship with North Harbour rugby player Ben Volavola.

Woodley revealed her strong feelings about masturbation in a recent interview with Net-a-Porter.

"As a young woman you don't learn how to pleasure yourself, you don't learn what an orgasm should be, you don't learn that you should have feelings of satisfaction," she said.

"I've always had a dream of making a book called There's No Right Way to Masturbate."

It's a deeply personal interview, with Woodley also confessing her family is "super f**ked up" but also her "everything".

"They would do anything for me, and I would do anything for them. That's a lot more than most people can say about their families."

Woodley was in New Zealand in 2017 while working on feature film Adrift.
