'Stand up, make a difference': Radio host Clint Roberts' powerful call to NZ men over Grace Millane's killing

Radio host Clint Roberts has taken to social media with an impassioned message to men to "stand up and make a difference" in the wake of Grace Millane's killing.

The slain English tourist's week-long missing person case took a tragic turn over the weekend as police confirmed a body had been discovered.

A 26-year-old man appeared in Auckland District Court on Monday morning charged with her murder.

Roberts formerly co-hosted an afternoon show on The Edge with Guy Williams and Sharyn Casey, and now hosts a ZM show.

He directly addresses "boys" in his Facebook post, saying "this is our problem", before calling on people to stop using misogynistic language.

"Men - if you're angry about what happened to Grace Millane, remember it was a man who did this to her. A man who, somewhere along the line, was allowed to think that women are objects for men to own and to destroy," says Roberts.

"He would have expressed that belief in words, actions or attitude long before December 1, and he would have done that around other men."

He continues: "We've all heard, maybe even said, derogatory things about women before. At work, footy, or with our mates, but it has to stop. It's our job as men to call that shit out for what it is - women hating - and tell other men that it's not okay.

"I know it's a big leap from calling a woman a slut to killing her, but it comes from the same place, and it has to stop.

"Stand up, be a man, make a difference, be an ally."

Roberts' message on Facebook is just the latest public display of emotion over Millane's killing from a high-profile Kiwi. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern choked up while apologising to the 22-year-old's family, while The Edge's Megan Annear paid tearful tribute to Millane with powerful on-air letter.
