Iconic Auckland video store Videon hits the stop button

One of Auckland's last remaining DVD stores is closing for good on Saturday.

Videon, on Dominion Rd, has been unable to compete with online services.

Owner Adele Sutton says they specialised in hard-to-find, festival and documentary titles - and it's a sad day.

"Not only for us, but the many people that come to us - some almost in tears. The question everyone is asking is, what are we going to do now?"

She says many of their clients were elderly, who don't know how to stream films.

"[We] got Netflix just to see what it's all about, and we still prefer the DVDs. But that's just the way of the world, isn't it?"

She says the shop housed 40,000 DVDs. The closure was announced last month.

A staff member told NZME in December they planned to sell the remaining stock to a trust, with the intention titles would be made publicly available through university libraries.

Auckalnd's last Civic Video store closed its doors earlier this month. Video Ezy has also reportedly announced it's pulling out of New Zealand.
