Picture of egg on Instagram looks set to beat Kylie Jenner's world record for most-liked post

An unremarkable picture of an egg looks set to steal Kylie Jenner's record for the most liked picture on Instagram.

The snap was posted by @world_record_egg on January 5 with the sole intention of obtaining a new world record, and has since gone viral online.

"Kylie Jenner has the record for the most likes on an Instagram post with 18M," the caption on the image reads.

"Can we beat it with a picture of an egg?"

Reality TV star and makeup mogul Jenner scored the Instagram record last year when she announced her baby daughter Stormi's name alongside an image of the newborn's hand wrapped around her thumb.

According to Buzzfeed, social media users have now taken to the comments section in the famous photo, flooding it with chicken and egg emojis in the hopes of garnering more support.

The 'Egg Gang' account, however, is gaining on her. With over 1 million followers, the image has been liked over 15.5 million times at the time of writing.

A Wikipedia page chronicling the most-liked Instagram posts on the platform shows the world_record_egg post has made it to the number two spot.

Jenner has not yet publicly acknowledged the attempt to dethrone her. Her latest post - a photo of her and sister Kendall - has also been overwhelmed with egg-related comments.

"The egg is coming for u," one user wrote.
