Singer John Legend has publicly lashed out R Kelly calling him a "serial child rapist".

The public slam comes after a number of women came forward alleging the 'Ignition' hitmaker sexually and physically assaulted them.

Legend is one of a handful of A-list performers who's appearing in a new documentary Surviving R.Kelly, where those closest to the singer detail their experiences with him.

Fans have praised Legend for his appearance on the show. In an interview on the documentary Legend talks about how much pain R Kelly has brought into many people's lives.

He took to Twitter to respond to the praise saying: "To everyone telling me how courageous I am for appearing in the doc, it didn't feel risky at all. I believe these women and don't give a f**k about protecting a serial child rapist. Easy decision."

R Kelly has a long history of sexual abuse allegations from multiple women and girls. In 2008, he was charged with 14 counts of making child pornography, but was not convicted.
