James Buckley has apologised to viewers for a special reunion episode of The Inbetweeners, saying he's "especially upset" at the negative responses it garnered.

The 'Fwends Reunited' special aired on the UK's Channel 4 to mark the hit comedy show's 10th anniversary, but fans took to social media to express their displeasure with it.

"Was bloody awful, to be fair," said one Twitter user.

"Cringe interviews and you could tell no one wanted to be there... Peter Andre turned up - that explains everything wrong with it!"

Another posted a series of expletives about the episode, before declaring: "2019 ruined already".

Buckley, 31, played Jay Cartwright on the show, and took to social media himself to say sorry.

"Feeling pretty hated right now," he said.

"I'm sorry to anyone who feels let down with last night's show. I'm especially upset as it really is the fans that made The Inbetweeners a success, it certainly wasn't me. I might do an explanation video on [YouTube], or might just leave it and move on. #sorry."

His The Inbetweeners co-star Blake Harrison also responded to the backlash on Twitter - but with a shorter, more sarcastic tweet.

"So, 2019 off to a good start," he said.

NME has collected several of the angry viewer tweets in an article.

The Inbetweeners TV show ran from 2008 - 2010, which was followed by feature films in 2011 and 2014.
