Forrest Gump is getting an official Bollywood remake, 15 years after the original earned critical acclaim, massive box office results and six Oscars.

Indian film superstar Aamir Khan will play the titular character, made famous by Tom Hanks, while Advait Chandan will direct.

"We have bought the rights from Paramount," Khan told media, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"I have always loved Forrest Gump as a script. It is a wonderful story about this character. It is a feel-good film. It is a film for the whole family."

Khan is the only confirmed cast member, but there are reports Anushka Sharma is the frontrunner to play Jenny.

The Indian film will be entitled Lal Singh Chadha. The original referenced several defining events of US 20th century history, and it's unclear if the Bollywood remake will feature the same references, or Indian equivalents.

If you're wondering - "zindagee ek mithaee ka dabbe jaisee hai" is a Hindi way to say "life is like a box of chocolates".

Lal Singh Chadha will enter production in October.
