James Gunn is back at the helm of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3 movie.

Disney cut ties with Gunn in July 2018after a series of old offensive tweets resurfaced. In the tweets Gunn made light of rape and paedophilia.

Gunn apologised profusely when the tweets were brought to light by far-right personality Mike Cernovich, one of the key men behind 'Pizzagate', a false conspiracy theory which alleges Hillary Clinton ran a child sex ring in the basement of a pizzeria.

Deadline reports Disney changed its mind about the firing months ago after meeting with Gunn, but the decision's only just been made public.

The company never met with any other directors, despite suggestions New Zealander Taika Watiti was in the running to replace him.

Gunn shared his excitement to be back on the project on Twitter.

"I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the last few months. I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be.

"I deeply appreciate Disney's decision and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all."
