A top Australian DJ has been charged with trying to kidnap a two-year-old boy in San Francisco as the child was walking along a street with his mother.

Roscoe Bradley Holyoake, 34, known as DJ Roski, allegedly snatched the toddler and ran off - but he was apprehended by bystanders and held until police arrived.

Adam and Sabrina Walker told ABC News they were walking with their own son when they heard the mother screaming for help.

Sabrina Walker said the man suddenly stopped running and put the child down then smiled at everybody - before sprinting off again.

Her husband gave chase for several blocks and helped catch the offender.

The child suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Holyoake, known as DJ Roski, was arrested and granted bail of $US500,000 ($NZ744,677).

He made a brief court appearance and was ordered to return in two days to enter a plea.
