Joker trailer: Joaquin Phoenix's take on classic villain revealed

The first trailer for Joker has been released, giving Batman fans an insight into what to expect from the villain's origin story.

Joaquin Phoenix follows in the footsteps of Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill and Jared Leto in the role, with The Hangover filmmaker Todd Phillips directing.

The Joker trailer debuted at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where feedback was ecstatic and comparisons were made with Taxi Driver and Requiem for a Dream.

"Joker looks dark, emotional, and somewhat creepy. Joaquin's laugh will haunt me in my sleep. I can't wait," tweeted The Wrap's Beatrice Verhoeven.

Business Insider's Jason Guerrasio said the movie looks "f**king insane".

"Has a very Taxi Driver vibe to it, but definitely a lot more twisted," he tweeted.

"Shots in the Joker trailer evoke Requiem For A Dream, King Of Comedy, much more," tweeted Scott Wampler of Birth Movies Death.

"Very weird, very well cut, you do get to hear Phoenix's Joker laugh. I f**king loved it."

Joker is set in 1981 and stars Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a stand-up comedian whose failure to become famous see him enter into the criminal underworld of Gotham City.

Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Bill Camp, and Marc Maron co-star.

It's set for release in October.
