Revealed: What happened to Ed Sheeran in Game of Thrones, finally

In Game of Thrones S08E01, the fate of the character portrayed by Ed Sheeran in a much-maligned season 7 cameo was finally explained - but only for those paying close attention.

Back in 2017, the 'Shape of You' hitmaker appeared in an episode as a singing Lannister soldier, which was lambasted by fans as "infuriating".

Although he appeared to have survived a close encounter with the deadly Arya Stark - who greatly enjoys killing Lannister soldiers - he went on to get roasted by dragons, according to a trio of sex workers.

The three women were mid-coitus with Bronn in the most recent episode of Game of Thrones and were chatting to each other about how some of their "favourite boys" had been burnt to death by Daenerys Targaryen's dragons.

"That boy Eddie," said one young lady, before confirming she was talking about "the ginger".

"Came back with his face burned right off. He's got no eyelids now."

The social media users who seemed irrationally angry about Sheeran's cameo may be even madder now, learning he's only been severely maimed rather than killed.

But the singer himself was pretty certain 'Eddie' would survive - and was also under no illusions about the fury he triggered.

"I know what Game of Thrones fans hoped happened to my character. I'm sure they think my character got brutally, brutally murdered, but I think my character is still out there. I think he's chillin'," Sheeran told Buzzfeed in September, 2018.

"It was fun being in Game of Thrones, but I definitely think they should've killed me off in the episode. I reckon that probably would've been the redemption for people that didn't like it."

With only five episodes left of Game of Thrones, the "face burned off" line is probably the last we'll ever hear of Sheeran's character - but we may yet get one last glimpse at him yet.
