The musical inspired by the songs of punk rockers Green Day will make its debut in New Zealand this October.

American Idiot, named after one of the band's biggest hits, will play Auckland's Civic Theatre off the back off a critically acclaimed West End run.

Green Day frontman Bille Joe Armstrong described the story of three boyhood friends navigating a post 9/11 world as a "coming of age in a politically-driven climate".

The stage spectacular bills itself as a story of "youthful disillusion and the mistrust of society and government, a sentiment that has never been more current both abroad and locally".

As well as the titular song, the musical features the band's other iconic tracks, including 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' '21 Guns' and 'Wake Me Up When September Ends'.

The show has earned two Tony Awards, and in 2010 took out the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

American Idiot will open on October 10, with tickets on sale for Kiwi fans from June 13.
