Bindi Irwin rings in 21st birthday with engagement

Bindi Irwin has announced she's engaged to her long-term partner Chandler Powell after nearly six years of dating.

The daughter of Aussie wildlife icon Steve Irwin shared the news with her 2.5 million followers on Instagram, showing off her new diamond ring.

"On my birthday I said 'yes' and 'forever' to the love of my life," she wrote.

Irwin met pro wakeboarder Powell in 2013 at Australia Zoo, where she was working as a keeper and tour guide.

Powell said the pair "hit it off straight away", and have been together ever since.

Irwin said every day since the couple met has been "a whirlwind of adventure and true happiness".

"I'm so looking forward to spending our forever together as your wife," she added.

"Here's to a lifetime of friendship, purpose and unconditional love. Now let's get married already!"

Powell revealed to People magazine that he had arranged a photoshoot at Australia Zoo on the day of the proposal, telling his girlfriend it was to celebrate her birthday.

"Just before we started the shoot, I took her to a special part of Australia Zoo to ask the girl of my dreams to become my wife," he said.

In his own Instagram post, Powell gushed about his new fiancee, calling her by a pet name, "Bee".

"I love you more than anything in this world and I always will," he said.

"Happy Birthday."

Bindi's mother Terri Irwin also celebrated the news on social media, saying she knew her late husband Steve would be "so very happy" about the engagement.
