Disney star Cameron Boyce dies in his sleep at 20 years old

Disney actor Cameron Boyce has died in his sleep aged 20. The young actor had a seizure as a result of an on-going medical problem for which he was being treated, according to a family spokesperson.

"It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we report that this morning we lost Cameron," the spokesperson told ABC News on Sunday.

"The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him."

Boyce was known for his roles in the TV show Jessie, as well as a part in the Disney Channel film franchise Descendants.

He began acting at nine with a role in the horror film Mirrors.

The young actor had dedicated himself to charity work in recent years.

Boyce was awarded the Pioneering Spirit Award at the 2018 Thirst Gala, an event sponsored by the Thirst Project. The Thirst Project is a nonprofit organisation which builds freshwater wells in developing countries. Boyce raised $30,000 for the charity.

Tributes to the star have poured out on social media.

"The Walt Disney Company mourns the loss of Cameron Boyce who was a friend to so many of us and filled with so much talent, heart and life and far too young to die. Our prayers go out to his family and friends," wrote Disney chief executive Bob Iger on Twitter.

"Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Cameron Boyce," wrote musician Hozier.

"When we met I was taken aback by his energy and drive his dedication to his craft and the sheer kindness he exuded. It was a joy to witness the man's skill. Sending love to his family and loved ones."

Boyce's family has requested privacy while they grieve their loss.
