Natalie Portman's appointment as Taika Waititi's new Thor has some fans furious

News of Natalie Portman's appointment as the new Thor in Taika Waititi's upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder has divided Marvel fans.

Confirmation of the fourth Thor film, which sees Kiwi director Waititi back at the helm, came at a Comic-Con panel over the weekend.

Rumours of the franchise's return had already been swirling, but the revelation that Portman will be wielding Thor's hammer has left some enthusiasts shaken.

"Endgame SUCKED, This will SUCK. the female IronMAN will SUCK," one fan ranted on Twitter.

"Marvel has shot itself in the foot being all liberalcorrect. I didn't even bother with the meeto [sic] marvel movie."

"Give me a f'm break [sic] I'm a Natalie Portman fan but Thor is a male character…" said another.

"When do we get a male Wonder Women? [sic] Democrat PC will wreck the world. Stand up and say NO."

Another disgruntled Marvel fan called Portman "the worst part of two bad Thor movies," adding that they hoped Waititi was a "miracle worker".

Meanwhile, the other half of the fanbase appears to be overjoyed with the casting choice.

"NATALIE PORTMAN AS FEMALE THOR! I AM: DECEASED," one fan wrote.

"Behind every great man….is a woman holding a hammer ready to throw down," one Twitter user captioned an image of Waititi and Portman at the announcement.

As for the Oscar-winning actress' thoughts on her new gig, she told the Comic-Con crowd: "It feels pretty good."

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to hit cinemas in 2021.
