Book of Mormon coming to New Zealand

The acclaimed musical from the guys who created South Park is heading to New Zealand for the first time.

The Book of Mormon opens at Auckland's Civic Theatre in March, 2020.

Winner of nine Tony Awards, four Olivier Awards, a Grammy and grossing more than US$500 million worldwide, the show was reportedly called "the best musical of this century" by New York Times critic Ben Brantley.

The musical comedy is described as a satirical examination of Mormon beliefs and practices that ultimately endorses the positive power of love and service.

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone wrote the play along with Robert Lopez, who co-wrote hit musical Avenue Q.

During its Australian run, the show set sales records in Sydney and is the highest-grossing musical in the Princess Theatre's 159-year history in Melbourne.

Tickets to The Book of Mormon's Auckland shows go on sale August 5.
