Donald Trump labels Hollywood 'racist', calls movies 'very dangerous'

US President Donald Trump has railed against Hollywood, which he calls "racist" and says the films it puts out are "very dangerous" to American society.

Trump initially made the comments to reporters outside the White House and did not elaborate on which films he considered racist or dangerous.

"We're looking at that right now. We have a lot of these companies coming in a little while, as you know. We're going to be very tough with them. They're treating conservatives very unfairly," he said.

"Hollywood, I don't call them the 'elites,' I think the elites are people they go after in many cases. But Hollywood is really terrible.

"You talk about racist, Hollywood is racist. What they're doing with the kind of movies they're putting out is actually very dangerous for our country. What Hollywood is doing is a tremendous disservice to our country."

Trump repeated the comments on Twitter.

"Liberal Hollywood is Racist at the highest level, and with great Anger and Hate! They like to call themselves 'Elite,' but they are not Elite. In fact, it is often the people that they so strongly oppose that are actually the Elite," he wrote.

"The movie coming out is made in order... to inflame and cause chaos. They create their own violence, and then try to blame others. They are the true Racists, and are very bad for our Country!"

He still didn't elaborate which movie he was referring to, but a trailer released this week shows wealthy people hunting "deplorables", the term Hilary Clinton used to describe Trump supporters in 2016.

The Hunt follows a group of 12 'ordinary folk' who wake up to discover they are being hunted down and murdered by a group of wealthy elites.

Twitter troubles

Trump's initial outburst came after a reporter's question in reference to social media giant Twitter temporarily locking the re-election campaign account of US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell earlier in the week.

"They're treating conservatives very unfairly," Trump said of social media firms.

Various media organisations have reported that Twitter froze the account because the campaign posted a video of protesters shouting profanity directed at McConnell and which violated the company's policy on tweets containing violent threats.

Media organisations have also reported that the Trump campaign, the Republican party and other GOP groups have called for a freeze of their spending on Twitter to protest the temporary locking of McConnell's account.

The White House was set to discuss on Friday violent extremism online with representatives from a number of internet and technology companies. The meeting comes after the racially-motivated attack that killed 22 people at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, which prompted Trump announcing that he wants police to do more to stop extremists who are active online before they can turn to murder.

"We have a lot of these companies coming in a little while," Trump told reporters. "We're going to be very tough with them."
