Ewan McGregor is officially back as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The Star Wars prequels actor will reprise his role as the veteran Jedi in a new series for Disney's new streaming service, Disney Plus.

The announcement was made at D23, an expo hosted by the entertainment giant this weekend in Anaheim, California.

"Hello there! Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in an untitled series for #DisneyPlus! #D23Expo," the expo's Twitter account announced on Saturday (NZ time).

"Hello there" is a line from 2005's Revenge of the Sith often used in memes.

The new series will be set around the same time as the standalone Solo film, which hit the big screen last year. At the time Kenobi is on Tattooine, keeping an eye on the growing Luke Skywalker, aware he is the secret son of Sith lord Darth Vader.

Disney Plus will launch in November at $10 a month in New Zealand
