Barney the purple Dinosaur is set to make a comeback, more than 10 years after his last on-screen appearance.

Mattel Films has announced its upcoming live-action collaboration with Black Panther and Get Out star, Daniel Kaluuya, to bring the iconic Barney & Friends character to the big screen.

Friday's announcement is the latest in a string of childhood favourites being revived for live-action adaptations, with Barbie and Hot Wheels set to be released next year.

In a statement, British actor Kaluuya described Barney as an "ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods".

"Then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood," he said.

"We're excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of 'I love you, you love me' can stand the test of time."

The project will mark the first partnership of Mattel Films, Valparaiso Pictures and Kaluuya's 59 percent production company.

The Barney & Friends show debuted in 1992 to huge success and ran for 14 seasons. Production of new episodes ceased in September 2009, although reruns continue to air.

The upcoming project will mark Barney's second time in the cinema. The family-friendly dinosaur made his Hollywood debut in 1998 with the feature film, Barney's Great Adventures. The film was panned by critics and failed to live up to the show's popularity.
