Country singer Tami Neilson preparing for New Zealand tour

She's been described by Rolling Stone as a fire-breathing belter and with a New Zealand tour about to kick off, Kiwis will soon taste of Tami Neilson's heat.

The country and soul singer is touring across the country starting next week and she's bringing her longtime co-writer and brother, Jay Neilson, along for the ride.

"It's really special to be able to bring him over here and show off New Zealand a little bit," she told Newshub.

The Canadian-born, New Zealand singer says performing alongside her brother will be like a blast from the past.

That's because the Neilsons spent much of their childhood in a family band touring with music legends including Johnny Cash.

"Every family barbecue everyone would invite us and be like "invite the Neilsons, bring the guitars," Neilson said.

"So it kind of feels like that. We're going to be inviting Kiwis into our lounge and to pull up a chair and sit with us."

Along with Neilson's extensive catalogue, fans will get a sneak preview of her upcoming album Chickaboom.

The new songs are more stripped back than what people might be used to, she said.

"[They're] kind of these really strong punchy little songs that stand up alone without a lot of production."

And with the new tunes in her back pocket, she's promising a punchy performance.

"It'll be a very very different way of performing for me than I've done for the past... well, ever!"
