Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll: How to be an American Idiot with the cast of the musical

Wake up, September has ended, and that only means one thing: time to get amongst the madness that is the Greenday-inspired musical American Idiot

Based on the post 9/11 Greenday album of the same name, American Idiot aims it's middle finger squarely at 'The Man', or is it 'The System'? Either way, everyone's well pissed off.

One only needs to watch a clip one of Greenday frontman Billy Joe's on-stage guitar-smashing tantrums to find the inspiration for the show's furious driving force.

There won't be any tap-dancing, jazz hands or rhinestones at Auckland's Civic Theatre this time, but rather syringes, simulated sex and swearing - so you might like to pack a string of pearls to clutch.

Yes, they will perform 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams', and yes, you will sing along, even if you didn't think you wanted to.

Newshub snuck through the stage door to go behind-the-scenes at the edgiest musical in town.

Watch the video to get a peek behind the grubby, bloodstained curtain at American Idiot, now on at The Civic until October 20.
