Bill Murray is set to reprise his role as Dr Peter Venkman in the 2020 Ghostbusters movie, co-star Dan Aykroyd has revealed.

Aykroyd made the announcement during a recent radio interview on The Greg Hill Show.

Murray will join his original Ghostbusters co-stars Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and Dan Aykroyd who will all return for the new film.

The film will also introduce new characters played by Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon and McKenna Grace.

In addition to announcing the news of Murray's return, Akyroyd provided his take on the upcoming film's script saying it is a "beautiful, heartfelt script that takes the real DNA from the first two movies and transfers that directly to the third, the next generation".

"It hands the legacy off to a new generation of stars, players, actors, and characters," Aykroyd says.

The next Ghostbusters will be set in the same universe as the original 1984 film and its 1989 sequel Ghostbusters II. It will disregard the generally well-regarded 2016 film, also called Ghostbusters.

The continuation from the original Ghostbusters films follows the abandonment of a rebooted series after the 2016 Ghostbusters box office bomb.

The next Ghostbusters is set to be released July 10, 2020.
