Broadcasting legend John Hawkesby returns to the chair to read The AM Show news bulletin

Former news presenter John Hawkesby has made a brief return to the news desk, reading The AM Show's 8am bulletin.

On Tuesday the show celebrated 30 years of Three and brought Hawkesby on the show to take a trip down memory lane.

Hawkesby reminisced about the good and bad times as one of Three's original newsreaders.

"[It's] very emotional for me to be back in the building," he told The AM Show.

"Three was always cavalier, colourful [and] controversial. It was like working with the Pirates of the Caribbean.

"It was quite loose; it was the smell of an oily rag."

After speaking with The AM Show hosts Hawkesby returned to the newsdesk for the first time in 20 years, briefly replacing usual newsreader Amanda Gillies to read the 8am bulletin.

Viewers and listeners were delighted with Hawkesby's return, describing it as a "stroll down memory lane".

"Great to see John! Wonderful presenter and a great guy!" one Facebook commenter said.

"John looks and sounds great," another wrote. "John reading the news this morning [Tuesday], still makes me feel calm."
