'I was in love with her': Kaitlyn Carter addresses Miley Cyrus romance for the first time

Kaitlyn Carter has addressed her much-talked-about whirlwind romance with Miley Cyrus in an emotional essay.

The reality TV star opened up in a feature for Elle magazine, insisting her brief relationship with Cyrus was more than "merely a summer fling".

"This past July, I went on vacation with a female friend; the next thing I knew, I was in love with her," Carter wrote.

"It wasn't quite that simple, of course. But it also wasn't very complicated, either. Until that trip, it had never crossed my mind that I was even capable of loving a woman the way I loved her."

Carter explained how she "fell hard" for the 'Wrecking Ball' singer while they travelled in Europe together in August, attempting to deal with their respective break-ups.

Cryus and ex-husband Liams Hemsworth had announced the end of their 10-year relationship that September, while Carter's split from The Hills star Brody Jenner wasn't announced until August.

"My first and only romance with a woman was born," Carter continued.

"It was that same familiar force of nature; I didn't have to think about a thing or over-analyse. It just happened and it felt exactly right.

"Reflecting back on our three-year friendship, I realised I'd always been drawn to her in a way I wasn't with other friends, but until that trip it had never crossed my mind to think of her in a romantic sense."

Carter called the relationship "a profound journey of self-discovery" that has helped her "reckon with who I am as a person".

Meanwhile, Cyrus has moved on with Australian pop singer Cody Simpson, whom she frequently uploads videos and pictures with on social media.

In one of her many recent posts, she told fans "you don't have to be gay" during an Instagram live broadcast with Simpson, where she was revelling in having finally found a "good" man.
