Tell Me Why to feature first ever lead transgender character in a major game

Upcoming release Tell Me Why is to be the first ever major video game with a playable transgender lead character.

The game is the latest from French developer Dontnod and was unveiled at Microsoft's recent XO19 event in London.

Tell Me Why is described as an interactive narrative adventure with gameplay similar to Dontnod's previous release, Life is Strange.

The transgender character is Tyler, who has an extraordinary bond with their twin Alyson. Players will be placed in a mystery that centres on Tyler and Alyson unravelling memories of a "loving but troubled childhood".

Dontnod worked with LGBTQ media advocacy organisation GLAAD on the game in an effort to authentically represent the trans experience.

GLAAD spokesperson Nick Adams says the developer and Microsoft created the character with "a real commitment to authenticity".

"Tyler is a fully-realised, endearing character, whose story is not reduced to simplistic trans tropes," they said.

"Creating a playable lead trans character - and taking such care to get it right - raises the bar for future LGBTQ inclusion in gaming."

Tell Me Why will be released on Xbox One and PC in 2020.
