Spotify releases its most streamed artists of the decade

Spotify has crowned Canadian rapper Drake as its most-streamed artist of the decade, British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran coming in a close second.

The music streaming platform has also released its most streamed songs and artists for 2019.

The Canadian 'Hotline Bling' hitmaker amassed more than 28 billion streams, taking out the title of Spotify's most-streamed artist of the decade.

"Drake has released if not one, but two, albums every year for the past ten years... so it's kind of like the long tail, the more albums you release the more listens you're going to get," RNZ music host Charlotte Ryan says.

With 2.3 billion streams, Ed Sheeran's hit 'Shape of You' has taken out Spotify's most-streamed song of the decade.

Sheeran also came second to Drake is the most-streamed artist of the decade stakes. The two hitmakers were followed by Post Malone, Ariana Grande and Eminem.

Post Malone was Spotify's most-streamed artist of 2019, amassing more than 6.5 billion streams.

Seventeen-year-old Billie Eilish followed, with pop star Ariana Grande coming in third.

As for New Zealand, Auckland artist Benee's hit 'Soaked' was the most-streamed Kiwi song.

"Benee hasn't had a number one New Zealand chart placing, so the fact she has the number one most streamed single for 'Soaked' is incredible," Ryan says.

Dunedin hitmakers Six60 were Spotify's most-streamed Kiwi artist in New Zealand.
