Google Trends has released New Zealand's most popular searches of this year.

Some of the searches are relatively unsurprising with Greta Thunberg and the Rugby World Cup both making the list.

Interestingly, 20-year-old makeup artist and YouTube star James Charles came in number one for the most-searched global figures.

The American internet personality's public spat with former friend and fellow beauty influencer Tati Westbrook gained worldwide attention this year leading to fans calling to "cancel" him.

The Christchurch Shooting and Nelson fire were among world news events including the fall of the Berlin wall and the London Bridge attack that garnered attention from the nation.
