Oscars 2020: Elton John performs '(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again' from Rocketman

Elton John delighted the star-studded crowd at the 2020 Academy Awards with a performance of his song '(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again'.

The song was written for John's biopic Rocketman, where he was played by one of last year's breakout stars, Taron Egerton. Egerton also performed on the track but didn't take to the stage at the Oscars, despite being in the audience.

The song closes out the soundtrack for Rocketman as the film's final song and went on to take out the award for the Best Original Song.

According to an interview John gave Indie Wire, the duet with Egerton is supposed to celebrate John overcoming his battle with substance abuse.

"It had to sit perfectly alongside 'I’m Still Standing' and lyrically refer to my recovery from drugs and alcohol and the personal redemption that has come with it," John said.

The 'Tiny Dancer' hitmaker jetted back to the US off the back of his New Zealand shows in Dunedin and Hawke's Bay, and will return for the first of his Auckland shows on the weekend.
