Coronavirus: Taylor Swift dishes out thousands in cash to fans affected by COVID-19 lockdown

Taylor Swift has gifted several of her biggest fans US$3000 after seeing social media posts about how their income has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

At least five loyal Swifties shared screenshots of messages from the 'Shake It Off' singer on social media, in which she offers to send them money to help with the stress of the current economic situation.

According to Buzzfeed, the first mention of Swift's generosity came from Twitter user Samantha Jacobson, who posted a message from the pop star that read: "Samantha, I saw your tweet about being stressed about bills piling up and I want to help. What's the best way I can gift you $3000? Do you have PayPal? Love, Taylor."

"THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING," Jacobson captioned the tweet. Around 20 minutes later, she followed up with a screenshot of the PayPal transaction from Swift, with the message: "Love you buddy, sending you a hug".

Jacobson later wrote that Swift follows her on Tumblr, but that she hadn't tagged her in the post about financial strife, insisting "it wasn't even for her to see".

Another fan named Holly Turner explained she had written a Tumblr post about her fear that she would have to move out of New York City "because of what corona has done to the music industry".

"Taylor Swift literally single-handedly saved my ability to stay here. I cannot even believe my eyes right now," she captioned a screenshot of a transaction for US$3000.

"You've always been there for me," Swift wrote in the accompanying message. "I want to be there for you right now. I hope this helps."

Three more Swift fans shared their experiences of the Grammy Award-winner's unexpected donations, one of which almost sustained an injury due to her excitement.

"I'm shaking and crying and just fell over a rug in my rush to ask my brother if Taylor's message was real and now I'm probably (definitely) concussed," India Rose wrote on Twitter.

"This virus took my new dream job away but Taylor Swift GAVE ME SOME JOY TONIGHT out of pure kindness."

Earlier this month, Swift sent a firm message to her fans urging them to practice social distancing after seeing "lots of get-togethers and hangs and parties still happening".
