Selena Gomez reveals bipolar diagnosis on Miley Cyrus' Instagram show 'Bright Minded'

Selena Gomez revealed she has bipolar disorder during a video chat with Miley Cyrus for the Instagram show Bright Minded

The finale of Cyrus' online chat show, designed to help support fan's wellness during social-distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic, featured Gomez along with Elton John, Kerry Washington and Jimmy Fallon.

Gomez said she recently learned of her diagnosis after going to McLean Hospital, "one of the best mental hospitals in America".

"I discussed that after years of going through a lot of different things, I realised that I was bipolar," Gomez said.

"And so when I got to know more information, it actually helps me. It doesn't scare me once I know it."

"When I was younger, I was scared of thunderstorms, and my mom bought me all these different books on thunderstorms," Gomez continued.

"She said, 'the more that you educate yourself on this, the more that you're not going to be afraid.' And it completely worked."

The two pop stars, who were both formerly child actors on Disney television shows, said they reconnected after Gomez left a butterfly emoji in the comment section of one of Cyrus' Instagram posts.

"It was very sweet because you just sent a butterfly emoji," Cyrus said.

"And that's enough, connecting with people and letting them know that you're there. A butterfly emoji is totally enough."

While the latest episode of Bright Minded was touted as a "finale", Cyrus explained she was just going on "hiatus" before returning to "bring light into dark times".
