The Edge's Meg Mansell reveals she had Jacinda Ardern admit to going grey weeks ago

The Edge radio host Meg Mansell has demonstrated the proper way to ask the Prime Minister about her hair after AM Show host Ryan Bridge prompted a tight-lipped response with his blunt line of questioning.

Jacinda Ardern rebuffed Bridge when he queried why she was dyeing her hair during an interview on The AM Show on Monday morning.

"Are you going grey or something?" he asked.

Ardern laughed it off but told Bridge in no uncertain terms the question was not a polite one to ask anyone.

However, it appears there is a way to get the Prime Minister to open up about her hair colour, as demonstrated by The Edge breakfast team some weeks ago.

The Dom, Meg and Randell show played a clip recorded when the country was still in COVID-19 alert level 4, in which Ardern admitted: "I'm going a little bit grey at the moment".

Mansell had been asking how the Prime Minister was keeping her hair looking "beautiful" during the lockdown and wondered if she'd had a fresh haircut.

Ardern thanked Mansell, but said she hadn't had any kind of trim. "I'm glad that there's a good distance between me and the cameras at the moment," she added.

Mansell's co-hosts Dom Harvey and Clinton Randell praised her gentle approach, announcing: "That's how you do it!"

Harvey noted that the question of going grey was "not something you should ever ask" but that the information could be "surrendered" if the person wanted.
