The creators of Little Britain have apologised for playing characters of other races in the hit TV comedy show.

Matt Lucas and David Walliams both posted on Twitter their regret at having created and played blackface characters.

The two comedy actors played characters from different races in both Little Britain and Come Fly With Me, a spoof documentary about an international airport.

Both posted similar tweets saying they have spoken publicly of their regret and making it "clear it was wrong and we are very sorry".

In Little Britain Walliams played a character called Desiree DeVere, who was coloured, while in Come Fly With Me Lucas played a black kiosk worker Precious Little.

The apology comes after Netflix and BBC IPlayer both pulled Little Britain and Come Fly With Me earlier this month in response to worldwide Black Lives Matter protests against racism and police brutality.

The protests have been carried out globally since African-American man George Floyd was killed by a white police officer.

Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, has been charged with second-degree murder. Three other officers have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.
