Two men have been charged with the murder of one a Run-DMC member nearly 18 years on from his death.

Jason Mizell, known as Jam Master Jay, was killed when he was shot in 2002 at his recording studio by a masked man.

This week, prosecutors have called his death a "drug-related homicide", claiming the two men involved in his death were acquaintances of his who he had cut out of a drug deal.

According to the BBC, Ronald Washington, 56, and Karl Jordan, 36, have been charged with murder, along with narcotics trafficking and other felony offences.

"They walked in and murdered him in cold blood," said prosecutor Seth DuCharme.

It's been claimed that one of the men hugged Mizell before opening fire.

"We started investigating that case a very long time ago, in the early 2000s, but there were a lot of challenges in bringing that case," DuCharme said.

"For the crime of murder, the passage of time offers you no escape."

Mizell left behind a wife and three children when he died, while Run-DMC, responsible for hits like 'Tricky' and Aerosmith collaboration 'Walk This Way', disbanded a week later.
