The hosts of Australian breakfast television show Weekend Today are used to interviewing big-name stars, but were still left stunned when Chris Hemsworth interrupted their weather broadcast unannounced.

Presenters Rebecca Maddern and Richard Wilkins were shocked when the Hollywood A-lister sauntered up to reporter Lauren Phillips, who was presenting the weather from a field in the small town of Scone, NSW.

Hemsworth helped Phillips rattle off the regional weather report for the day while Maddern and Wilkins watched on in stunned silence.

Hemsworth suggested Melbourne residents "get their brollies out," while warning those living in Karratha to "slip slop slap" with a temperature high of 36 degrees.

It wasn't entirely clear how Phillips had arranged the surprise celebrity cameo, but the reporter did say she had recently relocated to Hemsworth's home town of Byron Bay.

"You've made my job look very easy, would you like to take over?" she asked the Thor: Ragnarok star.

Wilkins, who is also Channel Nine's Entertainment Editor alongside his hosting role on Weekend Today, told Hemsworth he would be booked for the same time tomorrow morning.

"Sorry, I’m only available for the next 35 seconds," Hemsworth replied.

Maddern struggled to compose herself after the segment ended, asking "Did that just happen?"

"Dickie, you’re the one who usually comes up with the big names on this show, but you have been trumped," she told her co-host Wilkins.

"What about that? Chris Hemsworth. Did that just happen? He just read the weather on Weekend Today. I’m a bit hot!"

Hemsworth said he took the opportunity to make his weather-reading debut while visiting Scone to help out with a wildlife conservation project.
