Emma Roberts has admitted she blocked her own mum on Instagram after she accidentally revealed the actor's pregnancy news to fans without permission.

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Roberts said she bought her mum an iPhone for Mother's Day, which she described as "the worst thing she ever did".

The We're the Millers star explained her mum started out slowly by setting up a Google alert set up for her daughter, which allowed her to read all of the tabloid stories ever written about her.

"And then she got Instagram," Roberts said.

"Which was okay at first. Just a couple hundred followers. Which grew to a couple thousand. Which grew to, she had no idea what she was dealing with..."

Roberts said before she could announce the news she was expecting her first child, she found out her mother was already thanking fans for their pregnancy well wishes online.

"It was a disaster," Roberts said.

"I found it all out on a plane, so I couldn't get to her. Like I couldn't call her or attack her. I could just iMessage with her and DM her and ask her to please stop."

The expectant parent said her mother had gotten confused when reading a gossip column about rumors of the pregnancy, thinking it was an official announcement.

"We kind of got in a fight," Roberts said. "I blocked her at one point. It was my only weapon."

"She texted me at 2 am: 'Queen, did you block me? Question mark. Sad face.'"

Roberts said she soon unblocked her mum, joking that it would at least be a good story to tell her baby one day.

"It's been an Instagram war with my mother that I never saw coming."

Roberts is expecting her first child with her partner Garrett Hedlund, who she met in March last year.
