Jeff Bridges has announced he has been diagnosed with a serious form of cancer and is about to start treatment.
The actor used a tongue-in-cheek quote from his iconic role as The Dude in the movie The Big Lebowski to reveal the news in a tweet.
"As The Dude would say, 'new shit has come to light'," he began.
"I have been diagnosed with lymphoma. Although it is a serious disease, I feel fortunate that I have a great team of doctors and the prognosis is good.
"I'm starting treatment and will keep you posted on my recovery."
Fans immediately flooded the comments section of Bridges' tweet with well-wishes, with many of them also referencing The Big Lebowski.
"Give it hell and have a White Russian on me!" one Twitter user wrote, mentioning The Dude's drink of choice.
"That's a bummer, man," wrote another, utilising another line from the movie.
In a follow-up tweet, Bridges wrote that he was "profoundly grateful" for the love and support he had received from family and friends.
"Thank you for your prayers and well wishes. And, while I have you, please remember to go vote. Because we are all in this together," he concluded.
