Eden Park concerts: Six60 wants to be first to take centre stage at Eden Park

Eden Park stadium is fighting to host six concerts per year - and Kiwi band Six60 wants to be the first to take centre stage.

Crowds of up to 60,000 could attend weekend concerts at the national stadium, if its bid to operate as a part-time music venue succeeds.

Eden Park's owners opened its arguments on Monday at the start of a five-day hearing.

More than 3000 submissions are being considered, and while the majority are in favour, the concept has proved divisive among local residents - with noise being the main concern.

One high-profile advocate for the proposal is Six60 frontman Matiu Walters. They sold out Western Springs earlier this year, and want to do the same at Eden Park.

"We're a band that always likes another challenge, and this would be amazing for the industry as a whole... it's been a tough year. It's just another kind of glass ceiling to break open," he told Newshub.

"I've seen historical moments here - we want to make a historical moment."
