Demi Lovato reveals the sad reason always kept her hair long before chopping it short

Demi Lovato has explained the reason for her bold new cropped haircut, revealing that she used to "hide behind" her long locks while battling her eating disorder.

The 28-year-old pop star says she now "feels free" and "more authentic" after shaving most of her hair off and sporting a short, hot pink style, saying that it was all part of her personal journey.

"I used to use my hair to hide behind," she said during an appearance on The Ellen Show.

"It would cover my body. So when I started doing all this work on myself, I thought, 'What is something that I've been holding onto my whole life that I need to let go of?' And it was that. I feel more myself now."

Lovato is preparing to tell all in a new docuseries entitled Dancing with the Devil, which focuses on her near-fatal drug overdose two years ago and how she's since recovered.

"I wanted to set the record straight, I wanted to tell the world, 'hey this is what happened, this is how I got through it, and hopefully this can help you too'," she said.

In the trailer for the YouTube feature, Lovato reveals her overdose caused three strokes and a heart attack, leaving her minutes from death. The clip also references the 'Cool for the Summer' singer's short-lived engagement to Max Ehrich and shows the moment she first took the plunge and cut off all her hair.
