Disney has revealed the first official poster for the upcoming live-action prequel to 101 Dalmatians starring Emma Stone as Cruella De Vil.

The black-and-white artwork features Stone with a curly two-tone wig and bold, dark makeup - a far younger and sultrier version of the infamous villain than previously portrayed on the silver screen. Commentators are describing it as a "punk-rock" twist on the character, which fits with the film's setting in 1970s London.

The poster teases a release date as sometime in May, 2021, but social media users are already in a frenzy about Stone's take on the fur-coat-loving lady.

"I'm so excited Cruella de Vil is one of my favourite Disney villains and Emma Stone looks so goddamn goooooodddddd," one tweet read.

"Emma stone as Cruella is already iconic," said another.

"Emma Stone was clearly born to play Cruella de Vil," a third mused, but not everyone agreed.

"I don’t understand why they're making this movie at all," one Twitter user commented. "They already made a live-action 101 Dalmatians remake 25 years ago."

The 1996 version of the film starred Glen Close in the role of Cruella with a performance that some thought could not be competed with.

"No offence to Emma Stone, but I doubt she’ll be able to match Glenn Close’s enthralling and manic performance as Cruella in that film," one tweet continued.

"Never forget that Glenn Close was *actually perfect* as Cruella de Vil," wrote another.

Stone herself praised Close as the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) in a 2019 interview with Entertainment Tonight, adding that it was "bananas" that she had an opportunity to take on the role.

The La La Land star also explained that the upcoming film "comes before" Close's story, following the early years of the character.

"This leads to her, to where she becomes true greatness," she explained.
