The hosts of The Edge's breakfast radio show struggled to control their emotions while speaking to a woman whose dog had just died, before surprising her with a cash prize to help with the vet bills.

Dom Harvey, Meg Mansell and Clinton Randell made a call to a listener called Jennifer on Friday after they were tipped off by a text from a family member.

"They wanted us to give you a call because they said you've had a really rough time recently with a dog," Meg said.

"Yeah, she passed away last night," the woman replied through tears.

"Oh listen, we all have dogs here all three of us, and we just can't imagine what that's like, it's just awful," Dom replied.

Jennifer explained that her 18-month-old British Bulldog Ava had swallowed a piece of a dog toy that got lodged in her stomach, and while vets had worked tirelessly to remove the object with surgery, there were complications.

"We all did the best that we could, but she just couldn't pull through," she said.

"We gave her the best chance that we could, and she fought as hard as she could fight, and it's a blessing in some ways because she's not suffering, but it still doesn't make the heartache any worse."

Dom told the caller: "To make things even worse, even though the vets did an amazing job, you're still stuck with the bill," before the hosts announced Jennifer had won a thousand dollars as part of their on-air promotion that morning.

"Oh my God, that is so amazing because my vet bill is sitting at four grand, so a thousand dollars, you don't know how far that's going to go," Jennifer sobbed.

"I've been so stressed about how to pay for this, that's just so amazing, thank you so much."
