From feathers to face masks to fish-themed handbags, the Oscars red carpet hosted it all on Sunday (local time).

As the COVID-19 pandemic forced many awards ceremonies to go virtual over the past year, Hollywood A-listers made a welcome in-person return to the 93rd annual Academy Awards.

So did the extravagant, weird and wonderful looks that graced the carpet set up at Los Angeles' Mission Revival-style Union Station.

The awards were pushed back by more than two months in the hopes relaxing COVID-19 restrictions would allow for a more celebratory event.

Attendees weren't required to wear masks but had to maintain social distancing on the carpet which was shorter than usual, reports CNN.

And while there may have been a shortage of people compared to pre-pandemic Oscars, there was no shortage of glamorous evening wear.

Newshub rounded up all of the weird and wonderful looks from the 2021 Oscars:

As always, gold had a huge presence.

Ahmir Khalib Thompson, the musician, songwriter and author known as Questlove, had arguably the best gold moment of them all. Wearing an understated black look he stole the show by pairing it with gold Crocs.

Yes, Crocs.

Carey Mulligan was dripping in gold glitter, wearing Valentino Haute Couture.

Andra Day wore a sleek cut-out Vera Wang gown - and according to Variety, US$2 million worth of Tiffany & Co diamonds to match.

Don't forget - all that glitters is not gold - Australian actress Margo Robbie wore a floral, metallic Chanel number, all while debuting a new fringe.

While an in-person red carpet may ring true of pre-pandemic normality, the odd mask brought us back to COVID-19 reality.

Zendaya stood out in a stunning Valentino Haute Couture yellow dress, featuring cutouts and a matching yellow mask - not to mention the whole look glowed in the dark.

Danish screenwriter Elvira Lind also accessorised with a pink mask which hung around her neck by a gold chain.

Accessories took many forms.

Screenwriter Erica Rivinoja accompanied her hot pink dress with a pink clutch... which was shaped like a prawn. The plastic handbag featured a picture of a prawn on top just to make it all the more noticeable.

Singer-songwriter Celeste Waite paired her red and black dress with a bedazzled heart clutch complete with arteries and valves.

Instead of bringing along an animated accessory, Regina King metamorphosed into a beautiful butterfly herself, in custom baby blue crystal-encrusted Louis Vuitton she took everyone's breath away.

Colman Domingo stood out in a hot pink Versace suit moment. Sequins draped down his shoulders with gold buttons matching his gold jewellery, the perfect way to tie everything together.

In another stunning suit was Tiara Thomas, wearing a Jovana Louis all-white ensemble. Featuring a flared pant and feathers on her blazer, it combined excitement with elegance.

Meanwhile, Laura Dern was in a feathery fit. It was a lot.

In classic Hollywood red was Angela Bassett with structured-bow like sleeves, while Amanda Seyfried embodied the true Oscars look.
