Sex and the City reboot replaces Kim Cattrall with non-binary bi-sexual star Sara Ramirez

HBO Max has announced non-binary, bi-sexual star Sara Ramirez will join the cast of the Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That... alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis.

Greys Anatomy star Ramirez will play a character called Che Diaz in the upcoming series, who will use they/them pronouns. Ramirez came out as nonbinary in August, and uses she/they pronouns.

It appears Ramirez' character will fill the hole left by Kim Catrall, who refused to join the cast as Samantha Jones for the spinoff, despite having played the role in all six series of Sex and the City and two movies.

Cattrall and Jessica Parker have been embroiled in a lengthy and public feud since 2004 when Cattrall first mentioned that there had been tensions over money during an interview on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross.

In a 2017 interview with Piers Morgan, Cattrall announced she and her co-stars had "never been friends'' and insisted she wasn't the "baddie" and Jessica Parker "could have been nicer".

Cattrall was also clear she wouldn't do any more Sex and the City projects, but suggested another actress - possibly a woman of colour - could play her role, "or bring in another character".

Ramirez's new role looks to do just that, with the show's creators describing the character as "a non-binary, queer, stand-up comedian that hosts a podcast on which Carrie Bradshaw is regularly featured".

Che Diaz is described as "a big presence with a big heart whose outrageous sense of humour and progressive, human overview of gender roles has made them and their podcast very popular."
