A film about the response to the Christchurch terror attack is currently in the works, with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern - played by Rose Byrne - set to be front and centre.
However, the project - titled They Are Us - has caused outrage online, with commentators accusing it of being "exploitative" of the tragic March 2019 event.
"The movie isn't about the victims! It's focused on Jacinda. And yes, she did well, but we CANNOT disregard the victims. No one wants this movie," one tweet reads.
Newshub has been told the Prime Minister and the Government have no involvement with the film.
The script has reportedly been developed in consultation with several members of the mosque affected by the tragedy and it will be produced in New Zealand.
According to Deadline, Kiwi writer and director Andrew Niccol said the film is more about the response to the attack and "how an unprecedented act of hate was overcome by an outpouring of love and support" than the actual event itself.
"The film addresses our common humanity, which is why I think it will speak to people around the world. It is an example of how we should respond when there’s an attack on our fellow human beings."
