Primal Scream 'bless' Lorde after she accidentally borrows one of their tunes for 'Solar Power'

Kiwi singer-songwriter Lorde has admitted her new summery hit 'Solar Power' sounds just like classic UK band Primal Scream.

She even reached out to the group's frontman Bobby Gillespie to make sure he was cool with her nicking their signature sound.

Released on Friday, 'Solar Power' instantly drew comparisons to the band's hit record Screamadelica, with many on social media singling out 'Loaded', which hit the UK top 20 in 1990 and was named the 59th best song of all-time in 2014 by NME magazine.

"I had never heard Primal Scream in my life," Lorde told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1.

"I’d been told to check them out. I wrote the song on the piano and then we realised like, this is, it sounds a lot like 'Loaded'. It's just one of those crazy things that like, they just were the spiritual forebears of the song.

"I reached out to Bobby and he was so lovely about it. And he was like, you know, these things happen. You caught a vibe that we caught years ago. And he gave us his blessing. So let the record state 'Loaded' is 100 percent, the original blueprint for this, but we arrived at it organically. And I'm glad we did."

None of Primal Scream's songwriters are listed as writers on 'Solar Power'.

'Loaded' itself was a remix of an earlier Primal Scream tune, 'I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have'.

The video has been viewed nearly 3 million times in its first 24 hours online.
