Netflix buys Roald Dahl estate as streaming wars heat up

The streaming wars just cranked up a notch with the announcement Netflix has shelled out undisclosed gazillions for the rights to Roald Dahl's books.

The deal means the streaming giant will own creations like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG.

Oscar winning New Zealander Taika Waititi is working on an animated series based on the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and a separate, original story centred on the Oompa-Loompas.

Writing in his garden hut, Dahl has coloured childhoods since the 1960s with more than 300 million books sold worldwide, also including the likes of The Twits, Fantastic Mr Fox and The Witches.

Now Netflix owns the publishing rights to the books as well as the TV and film rights and will receive the royalties.

In total, 19 TV shows, films, stage shows and live experiences are already in the works and while they won't reveal how much the deal is worth, the company's more than 200 million subscribers around the world will ensure these timeless tales are brought to new audiences.
