The Crown, Ted Lasso biggest winners at 2021 Emmys

The Crown dominated the drama categories while Ted Lasso cleaned up in comedy at the 73rd annual Emmy Awards, which have been handed out at a vaccinated-only, socially-distanced ceremony broadcast live from LA and London.

New Zealander Jessica Hobbs was one of the big winners, claiming the Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series award for her work on The Crown.

She is just the fourth woman to win the award in history.

The Crown also won Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series and acting awards for Olivia Colman, Josh O'Connor, Gillian Anderson and Tobias Menzies.

For fans of Ted Lasso, which has entertained millions with its love and joy and cuss words during the pandemic, the 2021 Emmys also delivered. The Apple TV Plus show won Outstanding Comedy Series along with acting wins for Coach Lasso himself Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein, aka Roy 'f**king' Kent.

Very much in the 'no surprises' category, Kate Winslet claimed another Emmy for her role as jaded small-town detective in Mare of Easttown. The HBO show also snagged two other big acting awards for Evan Peters and Julianne Nicolson, but lost Best Limited Series to The Queen's Gambit in one of the big shocks of the night.

Other notable winners include I May Destroy You, which claimed Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
