Michael K Williams, the actor who played Omar Little in the TV series The Wire, was found dead in his New York apartment this week, the New York Police Department said. He was 54.
Lieutenant John Grimpel, a NYPD spokesman, said Williams was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment after a 2pm (local time) emergency phone call to emergency operators.
Williams, who received a 2021 Emmy nomination for his performance in HBO's Lovecraft Country, was also known for his role in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
The actor's long-time representative Maria Shafran confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter, adding that his family was asking for privacy as they were "grieving this insurmountable loss".
HBO mourned Williams' death in a statement saying the network was "devastated" to learn the news.
"[He was] a member of the HBO family for more than 20 years," the statement read.
"While the world is aware of his immense talents as an artist, we knew Michael as a dear friend who was beloved by all who had the privilege to work with him. We send our deepest condolences to his family for this immeasurable loss."
