Pregnant Sharyn Casey praises healthcare workers after '8 nights in hospital'

The Edge afternoons host Sharyn Casey has shared another health update with fans after returning home from over a week in hospital.

The radio presenter took several weeks off air to go on bed rest and in an Instagram post last week said she "wasn't panicking" over being in hospital, but was just taking precautions during her pregnancy.

"After eight nights in the hospital, I am home! Long may it last, everyone touch wood please," Casey captioned the new snap of her at home.

The 35-year-old mum took the opportunity to praise hospital workers for their dedication amid the COVID-19 pandemic, saying her stay made it really "hit home" that New Zealand needed to reach its vaccination targets in order to avoid overwhelming the healthcare system.

"It gave me a lot of insight into how lucky we are as a country to have such incredible people working in our healthcare system," she wrote.

The broadcaster said the midwives at the hospital "blew her mind", adding: "They work so hard, long hours, always friendly, reassuring and they never appear stressed."

"I felt so safe, looked after and lucky to be in their presence. Everything you read about midwives needing more money and support is true, they are total rockstars that deserve us to be bowing down at their feet!"

Casey also shouted out the "nurses, doctors, health care assistants and cleaners" working in hospitals around the country, saying whoever made the jello "deserved a medal".

"It really hit home for me even more, we need to hit our vax targets to stop our healthcare system from exploding, these are real human beings working their asses off everyday, risking their health to help us," she concluded.

"Let's not overwhelm them when we have a solution not to. If you're working in any area of healthcare at the moment, thank you for everything that you do, it is appreciated so much."

In a post from hospital last week, Casey said she wanted to make it "very clear" that her health situation had "nothing to do" with her getting immunised against COVID-19 while pregnant - something she discussed on social media in recent weeks.

"I'm relieved I have it especially with cases rising," she wrote at the time.
